Herb Smith serves the people of Skid Row as president of the Los Angeles Mission. Smith has served the Mission from 2001 through 2006 as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He knew that his life would never be the same when he first came to work for the Los Angeles Mission in 1999. After a few years as a missionary in Brazil, Smith was no stranger to witnessing poverty, but was even more affected and deeply moved when he saw the same poverty on the streets in our own nation.
Smith worked on staff as the Mission's Chief Financial Officer from 1998 through 2000, before accepting the position of Chief Operating Officer of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. After a year of working apart from the Mission, Smith's desire to again be a part of helping the homeless was fulfilled when he accepted a position on the Los Angeles Mission's Board in the summer of 2001.
Over twenty years of nonprofit experience with Wycliffe Bible Translators and Vanguard University has provided Smith with a strong foundation for his responsibilities as president of the Los Angeles Mission. He not only has the experience it takes to help in overseeing vision of the Mission, but he has a driving passion to be a part of helping meet the diverse needs of people on the streets, particularly those who battle with mental illness.
Smith actively serves with his wife for special events and meals at the Mission and says, "We come home completely exhausted by all of the activities, but know that we leave happy at the wonderful opportunity and the privilege it is to serve the homeless community." Smith firmly believes that the Los Angeles Mission exists to provide a high quality of service to all who come through the doors needing help, but most importantly service that offers guests hope and a second chance.
The Los Angeles Mission has a strong commitment to donors that Smith takes very seriously. "Friends of the Mission can be confident and know that we are using their funds to do exactly what we say we are doing - we are meeting the needs of a hurting community," Smith says. "We don't just want your money, we want your heart. There's nothing that changes your life more than seeing in person the work of hope that the Los Angeles Mission is doing each and every day of the year."
