Easter

Every Easter we celebrate with our friends and neighbors on skid row. We know that the over 4,000 meals we serve at our Annual Easter event brings hope to those who need it most. We are also able to give away over 600 Easter Baskets and some 2000 pairs of shoes thanks to etnies/Sole Technology and JAKKS Toys. It is a day full of hope and restoration for our neighbors on skid row, our volunteers and our staff.

Thanksgiving

LAM’s Annual Thanksgiving celebration is a wonderful day here at the Mission. The well-oiled machine of volunteers and celebrities dish up plate upon plate of turkey (3000 pounds), sesame and garlic roasted mashed potatoes (700 pounds), green beans (800 pounds), giblet gravy (80 gallons) and pie (600) while others pour and serve drinks. After serving about 4,000 meals, we were able to give out about 650 bibles, over 1,400 beautiful blankets and over 1,200 tarps in preparation for the colder winter months. We want to thank everyone who was involved from our title sponsor and their team members, celebrities, politicos and of course our regular volunteers as we could not even imagine pulling this off without all of them. We cannot wait to do it again next year and we hope to be able to bless the people of Los Angeles in a special way once again.

Christmas

Every December we have our annual Christmas dinner for families of Skid Row. Lines wrap around the block, as families enjoy a true Winter Wonderland and receive a meal, toys, shoes, and health care. Los Angeles Mission feeds over 5000 people on Christmas. All in all this is truly a blessed and wonderful day as God’s love is certainly in action right here in the heart of Skid Row. We want to thank everybody from the smallest donation all the way through our title sponsors in Nestlé and TOYOTA as without both of these great partners, this could never become a reality for those who could only dream of something such as this.

End of Summer Block Party

Homelessness is a tragedy for anyone, especially families with children. Making ends meet with little or no income means that compromises are a daily occurrence. The End of Summer Block Party, an annual tradition at the Los Angeles Mission, takes one compromise away from hundreds of families – school supplies. Over one thousand backpacks full of schools supplies are handed out to grateful kids.

For a decade, the Block Party has been a way for kids to play, win prizes and not worry about tough circumstances – if for only a day. The Los Angeles Mission has been serving the homeless and poor in Los Angeles’ skid row area for more than 75 years. Fifth Street, the main street of skid row, is decorated with bright and colorful tents and inflatable play areas set up for maximum fun. Slides, a dunk tank, face painting, crafts, games and of course backpacks full of school supplies are spread down the street which holds droves of eager children.

We are so looking forward to the next End of Summer Block Party on August 24th, 2013. We hope and pray that we can bless even more children who are in need of a great meal, a fun day and much needed backpacks filled with school supplies.
